Teaching with Art from Storage
Like most museums, WCMA is only able to exhibit
about 10% of the collection at any given time because of space constraints
and
light
exposure
concerns.
However, most of WCMA's holdings in storage are available for class
study. The musem's collections are diverse and offer a surprising wealth
of curricular links. Recent class sessions have studied art ranging from
Roman glass, cuneiform tablets, and ancient Egyptian objects to Indian
and Persian paintings, American painting and photography, and contemporary
prints. Please contact Elizabeth Gallerani,
Coordinator of Mellon Academic Programs, at (413) 597-4418 for
more detailed information about the museum's collection.
Class Visits to the Rose Study Gallery: The Rose Study Gallery is
a museum classroom where Williams College professors can teach with
art from storage. Classes can be scheduled Monday through Friday,
from 9:00
to 4:00, by contacting Elizabeth
Gallerani.
Student Assignments: Many professors give their students
assignments to write about works of art that are not on view in the
galleries. Elizabeth Gallerani,
Coordinator of Mellon Academic Programs, can help professors select appropriate
objects for assignments
and she can set up individual appointments or drop-in hours for
students to study the works of art. In some cases arrangements
can
be made for a work of art to be put on display for class assignments.
