The museum is distinguished architecturally by the neoclassical
rotunda of the original structure, an 1846 two-story brick
octagon designed by Thomas S. Tefft as the college's first library.
The structure was expanded dramatically by extensive additions
in 1983 and 1986 designed by internationally renowned architect
Charles Moore. His dramatic three-story entrance atrium connects
the original building with the four-story addition and links
the college's department of art and an auditorium on the lower
floor with the museum's fourteen galleries above.

Karl Weston, the museum’s founder and first director, established the Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) in 1926 to provide Williams College students with the opportunity for firsthand observation of fine works of art. LEARN
