Williams College
Museum of Art Presents From the Collection: New York, New York
Opening
February 23, 2002
From the Collection: New York, New York will open
to the public on February 23, 2002 at the Williams College Museum of Art
(WCMA). This exhibition will include more than 50 photographs, drawings,
and prints, all images of New York City, from WCMAs permanent collection.
This collection of diverse works, united by their setting, features photographs
by Louis Faurer, Alfred Stieglitz, Aaron Siskind, and Garry Winogrand.
Prints include works by John Sloan, Everett Shinn, Isabel Bishop, and
Reginald Marsh. Also included will be several works on paper by Maurice
and Charles Prendergast. These artists all worked in New York between
the late 19th century and the last decades of the 20th, and they all attempted
to capture the unique character of the city.
Photographs comprise the majority of works on display in this exhibition.
They are largely candid shots taken against the backdrop of New Yorks
streets and buildings.
Like Garry Winogrand, Aaron Siskind was a native New Yorker, who was born
in 1903 to a Ukrainian immigrant family. His best known work was a group
of photographs called Harlem Document, some of which are featured
in From the Collection: New York, New York. Louis Faurer was born
in 1916 and moved to New York in 1937. Influenced by Walker Evans, Faurer
sought to capture informal and unposed urban scenes.
From the Collection: New York, New York was organized by Marion
Goethals, Deputy Director and Director of Programs at WCMA, and Catherine
Malone, Williams Graduate Program in Art History 03.
A portion of the museums general operating funds for this fiscal
year has been provided through grants from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services, a Federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership,
and a lifetime of learning, and from the Massachusetts Cultural Council,
a state agency. The Williams College Museum of Art is open Tuesday through
Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission
is free.
