Williams College Museum of Art Presents Williamstown,
MA-Candy-colored surfaces so slick they appear wet and sticky to the touch.
Drips that defy gravity. Globs bleed into bubbles that meld into tubes
that feed into knots, and eventually all creep into a puddle on the floor.
Like bodies in a state of arrested formation, or fetishized children’s
playthings, Victoria Palermo’s brilliantly tinted large-scale rubber
sculptures bring to mind primordial earth, the workings of our internal
organs, as well as outer space. Palermo describes them as an “invasive
ooze that resembles new life forms, bodily fluids…or the chocolate
syrup that just spilled on the kitchen table.” Wall paper, designed
by the artist to evoke both psychedelic album covers and 19th century
decorative ceramic tile, lines the walls and surrounds the freestanding
forms, creating an other-worldly landscape in the gallery. Flo-mation
is a part of WCMA’s annual Summer Regional Artists Series and is
organized by Lisa Dorin, Assistant Curator, with the artist. About the Artist Victoria Palermo currently teaches sculpture at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She received a Master of Fine Arts from Bennington College, Bennington, VT and her Bachelor of Science/Art from Skidmore College. She has been the recipient of an Artist's Fellowship Grant from New York Foundation for the Arts, an Individual Artist's Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and has recently completed an artist residency at Yaddo. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the Capital Region and has been included in many group exhibitions in NYC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as internationally. She has most recently shown in Kidspace at MassMoCA. Publicity
