Family Day at the Williams College Museum of Art Celebrates Africa
Saturday, February 27, 1999
11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) will hold its annual Family Day on Saturday, February 27, 1999 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children, ages 4 to 13, who are accompanied by adults are invited to participate in art activities and workshops inspired by the art and music of West Africa. The event will be free of charge.

Organized by the WCMA Education Department, the "Africa" theme of this year's Family Day is inspired by works in the museum's current exhibition of West African art, "Tradition and Transition: African Art from the Brooklyn Museum of Art." Children will have the opportunity to make musical instruments, construct their own three dimensional masks, create appliqued felt pictures, play the African game of mankala on giant mankala boards, and more. Storyteller Lot Therrio from Stamford, Connecticut will perform African tales of animals, masks , and human wisdom at 11:30, 1:30, and 3:00. Drumming and dance workshops will be offered throughout the day.

This year's Family Day is made possible by a grant from the Museum Loan Network, a program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts, and administered by MIT's Office of the Arts, and by the Eugénie Prendergast Trust. For more information about Family Day or other activities of the Education Department call 413-597-2038.
