One
of the finest college art museums in the country, the Williams College Museum
of Art (WCMA) houses 12,000 works that span the history of art. Within the
broad range of time periods and cultures represented, the collection emphasizes
modern and contemporary art, American art from the late 18th century to
the present, and the art of world cultures. In addition to displaying works
from the permanent collection, the museum organizes loan exhibitions of
outstanding works from other collections.

Weston Rotunda, Architect Thomas S. Tefft
The museum
is distinguished architecturally by the neoclassical rotunda of the original
structure, an 1846 two-story brick octagon designed by Thomas S. Tefft
as the college's first library. The structure was expanded dramatically
by extensive additions in 1983 and 1986 designed by internationally renowned
architect Charles Moore. His dramatic three-story entrance atrium connects
the original building with the four story addition and links the College's
Department of Art and an auditorium on the lower floor with the museum's
fourteen galleries above.
Atrium, Architect Charles Moore
The museum's
collection, exhibitions, and building make it possible for students to
benefit from first-hand knowledge of works of art. The Museum works with
faculty from many disciplines to enhance the college curriculum. The Prendergast
Archive and Study Center at WCMA, founded in 1990, is a resource for American
modernists Maurice and Charles Prendergast and their contemporaries.
