Williams College Museum of Art Presents
Victoria Palermo: Flo-mation
July 3-September 26, 2004
Williamstown, MA-Candy-colored surfaces so slick
they appear wet and sticky to the touch. Drips that
defy gravity. Globs bleed into bubbles that meld into
tubes that feed into knots, and eventually all creep
into a puddle on the floor. Like bodies in a state
of arrested formation, or fetishized childrens
playthings, Victoria Palermos brilliantly tinted
large-scale rubber sculptures bring to mind primordial
earth, the workings of our internal organs, as well
as outer space. Palermo describes them as an invasive
ooze that resembles new life forms, bodily fluids
or
the chocolate syrup that just spilled on the kitchen
table. Wall paper, designed by the artist to
evoke both psychedelic album covers and 19th century
decorative ceramic tile, lines the walls and surrounds
the freestanding forms, creating an other-worldly
landscape in the gallery. Flo-mation is a part of
WCMAs annual Summer Regional Artists Series
and is organized by Lisa Dorin, Assistant Curator,
with the artist.
