Remington's Bronco Buster: From Art Icon to Pop Icon
February 20–July 25, 2010

Williamstown, Mass.– The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) presents Remington’s Bronco Buster: From Art Icon to Pop Icon, which focuses on Frederic Remington’s iconic sculpture, The Bronco Buster, from the museum’s permanent collection. This exhibition was organized by Curator of Collections Vivian Patterson with Williams students/co-curators Jared Quinton `10, Elizabeth Danhakl `11, and Amanda Reid `12. An event on Wednesday, March 3 at 4:00 pm, “Remington’s Bronco Buster: A Roundup,” will feature all the curators in addition to Karen Merrill, Dean of the College and Professor of History, as they discuss the sculpture and its historical implications. This event is free and open to the public.

Remington’s Bronco Buster explores how The Bronco Buster, one of Remington’s most famous works, solidified his reputation as the quintessential artist of the American West, leaving a lasting impression on subsequent generations of artists who depicted the landscape. Using works of art and objects from the 19th century to the present, this exhibition traces how Remington and his contemporaries proliferated the image of the bronco buster in entertainment, mass media, and popular culture. Additionally, Remington’s Bronco Buster situates the sculpture within the broader narrative of the image and the history of bronco-busting.
